La trilogie The Banner Saga est sortie sur une intervalle de six ans : on pourra facilement comprendre à quel point elle est importante pour Austin Wintory. Si on peut écouter les deux premiers volets pour leurs ambiances, le troisième s'apprécie vraiment pour sa technique et sa maturité. Austin Wintory accentue la pression à grands renforts de cuivres et n'hésite pas à aller vers la cacophonie ("Steel flowing as water") et même la dissonance ("Blades sing from below"). La meilleure des trois !

The Pathless: Meditations rassemble la quasi totalité des variations que l'on peut entendre dans le jeu vidéo et, à ce titre, sont très ambiantes. Ne cherchez pas à savoir où vous en êtes dans cette bande-originale car tout évolue de façon fluide : détendez-vous, laissez-vous faire, appréciez ce moment de symbiose avec la musique. C'est vrai : The Pathless: Meditations dure deux heures. Mais comment ne pas se réjouir face à la perspective de rester deux heures en compagnie d'Austin Wintory ?

I distinctly remember the feeling of booting up the game for the first time. I'd seen all the vlogs on Austin's channel, and listened to the music up to Cernos on the album, but I had no real context until starting to play the game. The second I saw the ivy covered title frame, I felt my blood run cold with ice, skin and hair raised, breath taken in anticipation of the journey that was about to come. Talk about setting the tone, man. Austin, you're without a doubt my favorite composer!

Tant de questions dont la réponse reste hors de notre portée : le Bien a-t-il une valeur ? Qu'est-ce que le Beau ? Comment peut-on dire non à Austin Wintory ? Remnants compile des démonstrations destinées à des studios qui lui ont claqué la porte au nez. De fait, c'est un excellent tour d'horizon de ses talents : symphonies vikings et celtiques (le duo "Axes upon Shields" et "Shields against Axes"), musiques folkloriques et carnavalesques... 100% devaient disparaître, elles sont 100% géniales !
